A follow-up to Will Smith’s 2007 film I Am Legend has been announced with the original actor returning, and new cast member Michael B. Jordan joining the post-apocalyptic fray.
The film is being written by Oscar-winning Akiva Goldsman, who also penned the wildly successful original film, not to mention the one that earned him his first Oscar, A Beautiful Mind.
Few other details are known about the project, and there is no director yet slated to helm the production.
How Will Smith may be playing in this film is a bit of a mystery – spoiler alert – he was killed at the end of the first movie as he was saving humanity. However, this doesn’t line up with the original story from the book of the same name that the film is based on. Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, screened the original ending which sees Smith’s character survive, but focus groups did not enjoy it, and it prompted reshoots such that his character dies in the end instead. This film could retract part of that story, or it may tell an alternate universe story, or something new entirely.
No release date or production schedule has been announced for the upcoming project, so we expect it to land sometime late in 2023, or likely in 2024.
