Modern Warfare sequel, re-built Warzone confirmed for Call of Duty 2022

Activision Blizzard has confirmed what we expected to be the case and reported just a few days ago: this year’s Call of Duty title will be a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare and is being developed by Infinity Ward.

The announcement was made by way of a “Special Briefing” on the Call of Duty website, as well as via Twitter, and came with a few other bits of news:

In addition to the main game being a follow-up to Modern Warfare, a new Warzone experience is being designed in tandem with the campaign and has been created from the ground-up in what they are calling a “massive evolution of Battle Royale with all-new playspace and a new sandbox mode.”

The development of both experiences is being led by Infinity Ward, the long-running Call of Duty developer and lead studio of the franchise.

While Modern Warfare (2019) was a masterpiece in visuals and audio, a new engine is being used to power both the sequel and the new Warzone experience, which should make for even more stunning gameplay, especially on next-generation consoles.

As is common with Call of Duty, this is essentially an announcement of an announcement, but without the second announcement part. They’re confirming that they’re working on the game, but without giving any hints as to when we’ll know more. There is also no confirmation of the title, but Modern Warfare 2 is not unlikely.

We usually see more CoD in April or May before E3, so we’re expecting to know more about this year’s outing in just a few short months.

Stay frosty.
