During this year’s EA Play conference for E3 2018, EA dedicated a small section to updating gamers on their EA Originals label, a program designed to fund and promote promising independent games. Two titles have spawned from EA Originals so far, those being Zoink Games’ Fe, and Hazelight Studios’ A Way Out, both of which released earlier this year. A third game, Sea of Solitude, was also confirmed to be in development under the EA Originals label by German developer, Jo-Mei Games back in 2016, and at this year’s keynote, EA finally showed a bit of the game in action.
Sea of Solitude appears to be a third-person action-adventure game with an emphasis on platforming-fueled exploration and puzzle-solving, pretty much placing it in a similar gameplay design foundation as Fe. The game stars Kay, an isolated young woman whose loneliness starts gradually turning her into a monster, with players tasked to find ways to start resisting the change and gradually restoring Kay’s humanity. Sea of Solitude boasts a colourful, canvas-esque art style that calls back to similar independent gaming efforts like Tequila Works’ Rime as well, which was shown off in a quick trailer to close out the presentation.
Sea of Solitude doesn’t currently have a specific release date, but it is targeting an early 2019 launch. The game appears to be in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, although its platforms weren’t directly clarified during the keynote.
