Square Enix is among several Japanese publishers that are throwing heavy support behind the Nintendo Switch, and that support is increasing further as of today. During today’s Nintendo Direct broadcast, Square Enix announced that their Minecraft-inspired spin-off, Dragon Quest Builders is officially headed to Nintendo Switch next year, after previously releasing on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita late last year.
Dragon Quest Builders combines action-RPG mechanics with Minecraft inspiration, challenging players to amass materials, eat food to stay healthy, and fight familiar Dragon Quest monsters like Slimes and Drackeys. The premise of the game is a riff on the original Dragon Quest title from the 1980’s, as players must assist with the rebuilding of the Alefgard Kingdom, in a hypothetical timeline where the original Dragon Quest’s hero accepts the villainous Dragonlord’s offer to rule the world with him.
Dragon Quest Builders was well-received in its currently available PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita builds, where it was praised for its enjoyable gameplay and effective blend of Minecraft-style creation. The game coming to Nintendo Switch follows confirmation that mainline sequel, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age will release for Nintendo Switch, after previously confirmed Dragon Quest XI builds for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS, along with the currently Japanese-exclusive release of Dragon Quest Heroes I&II for Nintendo Switch, though those action-based spin-offs are at least available separately in the West on PlayStation 4 and Steam. A sequel, Dragon Quest Builders 2, is also in development for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, though this follow-up has currently only been confirmed for release in Japan.
