It’s been a long time coming, but at this year’s PlayStation Experience keynote, Sony finally confirmed the existence of a sequel to 2013’s multi-Game of the Year-winning action-adventure game, The Last of Us. Serving as the final announcement of this year’s keynote, the sequel, titled ‘The Last of Us: Part II‘, was unveiled with a pre-rendered FMV teaser, which shows the return of protagonists, Joel and Ellie, as an older, 19-year-old Ellie tells Joel while playing a guitar that she is going to, “Kill them all”, after Joel is seen walking through a house that is filled with bodies.
The Last of Us: Part II doesn’t currently have a release window, with Sony and Naughty Dog both stressing that the game is very early in development at this point, and won’t release for a fair while. The game will be exclusive to PlayStation 4, naturally, and will see the return of lead voice actors, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson as Joel and Ellie, respectively. Naughty Dog has promised that more information about The Last of Us: Part II will be revealed in, “The coming months”, though for now, it’s just starting to get off the ground, with the developer also admitting that they nearly gave up on the game, after taking so long to crack a storyline for it.
The Last of Us originally released exclusively for PlayStation 3 in 2013, where it went on to become one of the most well-received and commercially successful games of that year. An updated remaster for PlayStation 4, The Last of Us: Remastered, was later released in 2014, updating the original game with native 1080p HD resolution and full 60fps performance, along with including all of the DLC that was previously made for the PlayStation 3 version for free.
