NOTE: Some spoilers for the final two episodes of the first season of “Legends of Tomorrow” are present in this article.
With the showrunners confirming that the titular team will be seeing some shake-ups in the upcoming second season, we now have word about one of the new DC heroes that will be joining Legends of Tomorrow in a regular role when the show returns this Fall. Animal-powered DC heroine, Vixen will be joining Rip Hunter’s band of time travelers in Season Two of Legends of Tomorrow, revealed by a report from TV Insider, after the character originated for the DC Television Universe in an animated CW Seed miniseries, before making a live-action appearance on this past season of Arrow, portrayed by Megalyn Echikunwoke in both instances.
There is a caveat to Vixen becoming a new member of Rip Hunter’s crew though; Echikunwoke won’t be reprising the role. Apparently, the opportunity was offered, but Echikunwoke was tied up in potential film projects, leaving her unable to commit to a regular part on Legends of Tomorrow this season. Instead, a new, older incarnation of Vixen from an earlier point in history will be invented for the show, with the character not yet being named, nor has an actress yet been chosen to play her. Don’t despair if you enjoy Echikunwoke’s Vixen portrayal however! Echikunwoke will still voice the character again in the upcoming second season of Vixen on CW Seed, and will still have the opportunity to re-appear in any of the live-action DC Television Universe shows at some point in the future.
Legends of Tomorrow recently wrapped its first season, which we awarded an overall strong 83% score to in our full review of the season, noting some early storytelling bumps in the first handful of episodes, but praising the characters’ journeys and smart plot resolutions by the season’s conclusion. The show stars Arthur Darvill as rogue Time Master, Rip Hunter, leading a team of DC personalities that currently consists of: Caity Lotz’s Sara Lance/White Canary, Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer/The Atom, Franz Drameh’s Jefferson Jackson and Victor Garber’s Martin Stein, who merge to become Firestorm, and Dominic Purcell’s Mick Rory/Heat Wave. Ciara Renee and Falk Hentschel are temporarily departing the series in Season Two, with Hawkgirl and Hawkman opting to end their adventures with Rip Hunter for now, and Wentworth Miller is also no longer a series regular, due to Leonard Snart’s death towards the end of the first season, though Miller has signed a new deal that will allow his Captain Cold to appear across all four of The CW’s current lineup of DC shows in guest roles next season.
