It’s been a very long time coming, but it’s finally happening. Mojang’s ultra-popular world-building/adventure game, Minecraft is releasing on Wii U, as confirmed by a post on Mojang’s official website. It will arrive on Thursday, December 17th.
There still doesn’t seem to be any Nintendo 3DS version in the works yet, but Nintendo gamers should nonetheless be very happy that the game is finally coming to the Nintendo eShop, after being available on competing platforms for several years. Apparently, no retail release is yet on the way, and to start, the game will be digital-only, and sold exclusively on the Wii U eShop.
Minecraft: Wii U Edition touts off-TV Play on the Wii U Gamepad as a big feature, naturally, allowing players to continue their Minecraft experience on the Wii U Gamepad Screen, should someone else need to use the television. Minecraft: Wii U Edition will also include six DLC packs within it for free, while offering sixteen more DLC packs to buy on the Wii U eShop at launch. The game will also include some sort of, “Holiday mash-up” for the timing of its Christmas launch. It is also being developed by 4J Studios, who originally brought the game out of the PC and mobile space with Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition back in 2012.
The first definitive evidence of the existence of Minecraft: Wii U Edition came last month, after numerous rumours and musings by Mojang and Nintendo, after the port had a rating uploaded to the European PEGI ratings board. The timing also comes on the heels of Telltale Games confirming that their adventure game offshoot of Minecraft, Minecraft: Story Mode, is set to release for Wii U in the near future, despite not launching on time with the competing PC, mobile, PlayStation or Xbox builds.
