Ubisoft has recently been teasing a major triple-A project that they previously hadn’t revealed to the public, despite the fact that it’s set to release during their current fiscal year, which ends on March 31st, 2016. After showing off some caveman-like imagery for an extended period of time to gradually draw back the veil on the announcement, they’ve now formally announced that the mystery project is in fact a new Far Cry game, titled ‘Far Cry: Primal‘!
Well, most accurately, it’s a Far Cry offshoot, sort of like Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon from 2013, and shouldn’t be confused with the inevitable Far Cry 5, which hasn’t been announced yet, and is no doubt still a long ways off, since Far Cry 4 released less than a year ago. The difference between Far Cry: Primal and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon however is that Far Cry: Primal isn’t being billed as a standalone expansion to a mainline Far Cry game, with Ubisoft instead billing Far Cry: Primal as a full triple-A game release!
Far Cry: Primal is set in 10,000 B.C., and is a whole new kind of Far Cry experience that unfolds within the fictional setting of Oros. Players will take control of seasoned hunter, Takkar, the sole survivor of his hunting group, as he crafts primitive weapons and tools with which to engage many enemy tribesmen and dangerous beasts, which include sabre-toothed tigers, woolly mammoths, and other prehistoric creatures. Obviously, guns won’t be featured in Far Cry: Primal, though the Outposts that have served as a recent series mainstay will make a return, along with new features like mastering and setting fires, and using dead prey to attract other creatures, possibly to lay waste to enemy Outposts for you.
Far Cry: Primal is being primarily developed by Ubisoft Montreal, who developed all of Ubisoft’s Far Cry games, including their recent port of the original that Crytek originally put together, and they will receive assistance from Ubisoft Shanghai, Ubisoft Kiev and Ubisoft Toronto. The game is scheduled to hit PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on February 23rd, 2016. A PC port is also in the works, though it won’t arrive until March at the earliest.
