Sony Pictures cleaned house with their upcoming blockbuster movie schedule today, cementing new release dates for many of their long-in-development projects. Most of these are projects that have suffered in development hell for years, which is great news for moviegoers, especially since some planned movies that already had dates are actually releasing earlier now!
First, in 2016, Sony Pictures will release Jodie Foster-directed, George Clooney-starring thriller, Money Monster on April 8th, followed by a mystery movie called The Shallows on June 24th, possibly inspired by the novel of the same name. The Paul Feig-directed female-driven Ghostbusters reboot has been bumped up a week as well, now releasing on July 15th. Fantastical pandemic thriller, Patient Zero is now scheduled for September 2nd, and the remake of Western thriller, The Magnificent Seven has been moved up, now releasing on September 23rd, rather than early 2017. Lastly, an untitled fifth Underworld movie releases on October 21st, followed by sci-fi drama, Passengers on December 21st, and, closing out that year, will be a remake of Robin Williams-starring family adventure hit, Jumanji on Christmas Day, December 25th.
For 2017, Sony Pictures has set a slew of other release dates, starting with mercifully placing a release date for long-gestating Stephen King adaptation, The Dark Tower, on January 13th, which will be followed by the delayed video game adaptation, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter on January 27th. Next, the long overdue Bad Boys 3 hits theatres on February 17th, presumably with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reprising their iconic roles from the former two movies. Better still is that Bad Boys 4 has also reserved a release date already, and is currently scheduled for June 3rd, 2019! Next for 2017 though, Edgar Wright-directed action-comedy, Baby Driver releases on March 17th, followed by a film adaptation of doll line, Barbie on June 2nd, which will be followed by another delayed video game adaptation, Uncharted, on June 30th. Lastly, animated comedy, The Lamb rounds off the year on December 8th.
These new dates join some previously established release dates for high-profile Sony Pictures movie projects, namely the new Spider-Man movie reboot done in collaboration with Marvel Studios on July 28th, 2017, action-thriller sequel, The Equalizer 2 on September 29th, 2017, Dan Brown novel adaptation, Inferno on October 14th, 2016, and the animated Spider-Man-starring comedy on July 20th, 2018, which will be wholly separate from the new live-action Spider-Man and related characters joining Disney and Marvel’s shared Marvel Cinematic Universe. Looks like we have plenty to look forward to from Sony over the next couple of years!
