Given the outstanding acclaim behind its recently-debuting second season, it’s small wonder that Netflix would waste no time renewing BoJack Horseman for Season Three. With the Television Critics Association Tour of Summer currently underway, Netflix has taken the opportunity to offer updates on their upcoming slate of original programming for the rest of the year, though this was preceded by the official announcement that BoJack Horseman has officially been renewed for a third season. As expected, Season Three will premiere in 2016, likely during the Summer, as with its two predecessors, and will once again comprise twelve episodes.
BoJack Horseman premiered in the Summer of 2014, and is an animated sitcom about an aged, self-destructive and depressed actor, who also happens to be a humanoid horse in a world shared between normal humans and humanoid animals. The first season received mixed to negative feedback from critics, due to underwhelming humour and shaky storylines, with us scoring the season a lukewarm 60%, citing similar issues, though it nonetheless drew a sizable crowd of viewers, ensuring a renewal for Season Two. Fortunately, Season Two was an enormous improvement, and received widespread critical acclaim, including from us, where it scored a lofty 92%, with its vastly superior storylines and comedy now praised by us and others. BoJack Horseman also aired a Christmas special at the end of 2014 that was received well overall, with us scoring the special an 80%, and claiming that it was a clever Christmas special that proved the series was on the right track to a much improved second season.
Along with confirming the return of BoJack Horseman next year, Netflix also offered updates on two other shows, namely when we can expect them to air, at least for Canada, the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand. To start, the fourth season of Longmire has been set for Thursday, September 10th. The gritty Western drama series stars Robert Taylor and Katee Sackhoff, and was previously cancelled by A&E after three seasons, with Netflix then picking it up for a fourth season.
Next, an all-new Netflix Original Series starring Aziz Ansari, Master of None, will premiere on Friday, November 6th. This is the first official confirmation of the show’s title as well, with the show being known to exist, though it has been formally untitled until now. Ansari portrays a thirty-year-old actor living in New York, who is a barely functional adult that can’t make minor decisions, let alone major career moves. The series also stars H. Jon Benjamin, Eric Wareheim, Lena Waithe, Noel Wells, and Kelvin Yu, and was created by Ansari, alongside executive producer, Alan Yang. Other producers include Ansari’s former Parks & Recreation producer, Mike Schur, Louie producer, Dave Becky, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt producer, David Miner.
Along with these two specific dates, Netflix also announced two new shows currently without dates, those being Chelsea Does, a four-section documentary that involves comedian and media personality, Chelsea Handler exploring fields of personal fascination, and With Bob and David, a four-episode sketch series starring Arrested Development’s David Cross and Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk, who are reuniting as a comedy duo for the Netflix event. Chelsea Does seems to be completely up in the air, though With Bob and David appears to be planned for a debut before the end of 2015, alongside new animated comedy series, F is For Family, the third and final season of Hemlock Grove, and the Sofia Coppola-directed special, A Very Murray Christmas, naturally starring comedy superstar, Bill Murray.
Netflix also announced that work is still underway on the planned fifth season of Arrested Development, another series that Netflix revived after it was cancelled by its network. The fifth season is still planned for 2016, with finalization of cast deals currently in the final stages of being ironed out.
Lastly, Netflix has a whole cavalcade of exclusive stand-up comedy specials in the works. These include: Demetri Martin Live (At the Time) on August 14th, Anjelah Johnson: Not Fancy on October 2nd, Anthony Jeselnik: Thoughts and Prayers on October 16th, John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid on November 13th, an untitled Brent Morin-starring special on December 1st, and Mike Epps: After Dark on December 18th.
