Considering that Jurassic World is absolutely pulverizing box office records since its public June 12th premiere, recently blowing past 2012’s The Avengers to become the third highest-grossing movie of all time, and the highest-grossing movie that James Cameron wasn’t involved with, it’s no wonder that Universal would waste no time green-lighting a follow-up. The studio has just announced that a new Jurassic Park movie, and a direct sequel to Jurassic World, will officially come to theatres on June 22nd, 2018.
Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard have been confirmed to return for the untitled fifth movie in the Jurassic Park franchise, though as he suggested previously, Jurassic World director, Colin Trevorrow doesn’t appear to be returning to the directors’ chair. Trevorrow will co-write the Jurassic World follow-up however, with Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg once again serving as lead producers. Trevorrow will also be an executive producer, alongside Spielberg.
Jurassic World currently sits at around a colossal $1.5 billion gross worldwide, and is Universal’s second movie in 2015 to gross over $1 billion, after Furious 7 from this past April. Universal has been enjoying an enormously successful year at the movies throughout 2015 at this point, currently being the most successful studio of the year, with Jurassic World and Furious 7 raking in massive box office money, and Fifty Shades of Grey making over half a billion earlier in the year, despite scathing reviews. Universal has also dominated the box office in recent weeks, between highly successful Despicable Me prequel/spin-off, Minions, and Amy Schumer comedy vehicle, Trainwreck, which proved to be a big surprise hit, particularly amongst female audiences, and the second big female-driven surprise hit of the Summer from Universal, after May’s well-received and high-selling Pitch Perfect 2. While turning a more modest profit, comedy sequel, Ted 2 also proved to be a success for the studio this Summer, despite getting more lukewarm reviews than its highly beloved, record-shattering predecessor.
Jurassic World is still screening in theatres, where it’s available in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D formats. The movie is a direct follow-up to the original Jurassic Park, taking place over twenty years later, and revolving around a successful and public dinosaur theme park on the site of the original Jurassic Park, called Jurassic World, which specializes in genetically-engineered hybrid dinosaurs. After one of the mutated dinos gets loose however, the park must try and contain the beast without starting a panic, even as their operation falls apart around them.
The enormous success of the movie has also spurred a video game tie-in of sorts from Warner Bros. and TT Games, LEGO Jurassic World, which not only realizes scenes from Jurassic World in satirical LEGO form, but also combines LEGO-ized scenes from the prior three Jurassic Park movies as well. LEGO Jurassic World is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo 3DS, and PlayStation Vita.
