Capcom is going to be keeping Resident Evil re-releases coming in. Following from this year’s release of the HD remaster of the original Resident Evil game’s 2002 remake (boy, that’s a mouthful!), they’ve just announced that the original game’s belated prequel, Resident Evil Zero, will also be getting the HD treatment.
As with the Resident Evil remake’s prior releases, Resident Evil Zero was previously only available on Nintendo hardware. The game originally released in 2002, the same year as the Resident Evil remake, and like the Resident Evil remake, Resident Evil Zero was exclusive to GameCube at that time. It later saw a re-release on Wii in Japan in 2008, with the Wii port being localized for North America in 2009, and both Europe and Australia in 2010.
Resident Evil Zero’s HD remaster will mark the first time that the game is available outside of Nintendo platforms. Ironically, as with the HD remaster of Resident Evil, its HD re-release won’t come to Nintendo’s current console at all either. Instead, Resident Evil Zero’s HD remaster will share the same platform layout as Resident Evil’s HD remaster, and will come to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. So far, the remaster has only been given a release window for Japan, where it’s expected to launch in early 2016, though a release in North America and PAL regions is sure to follow shortly afterward, given the success of Resident Evil’s HD remaster. We were quite fond of Resident Evil’s HD remaster ourselves as well, awarding it a positive 84% score, and praising how well the game has held up, and how its beauty and atmosphere is better than ever in HD.
Resident Evil Zero unfolds just one day before the events of the original Resident Evil. Also taking place in 1998, Resident Evil Zero stands apart for its use of dual protagonists, with players having to combat zombies and mutants with both S.T.A.R.S. police medic, Rebecca Chambers, and escaped murder convict, Billy Coen. The two end up on the vanguard of discovering the sinister secrets of the evil Umbrella Corporation, after a mysterious singing man controlling an army of mutant leeches derails a train, and appears to target the company.
