Super-villain-centric DC Cinematic Universe movie, Suicide Squad has been generating plenty of buzz since it started filming in Toronto recently, particularly with the controversial reveal image of Jared Leto’s new Joker. Whether you love or hate the DCCU incarnation of the Clown Prince of Crime however, you can now offer your two cents on almost every major player in the movie! Director, David Ayer has taken to Twitter to reveal an image of the lead personalities in costume, and you can check it out below:
While Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller is missing from the image (despite being present at Ayer’s table read, as revealed in a previous image tweeted by the director), as is Leto’s Joker that we’ve already seen, this would appear to confirm the lineup of the Suicide Squad proper for the movie, which is slightly bigger than the highest-billed leads. For the first time, we have proof that DC villains, Slipknot and El Diablo are part of the squad, played by Adam Beach on the far left, and Jay Hernandez on the far right, respectively. We also get the surprising bombshell that Katana seems to be a part of the team, despite normally being a DC heroine, with word that Karen Fukuhara is playing her.
As for the leads we already knew about, we can see some pretty interesting details about some of them. Jai Courtney’s (Captain) Boomerang and Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag look about as expected, though Margot Robbie’s lolita look as Harley Quinn is certainly a switch from Quinn’s normal comic book threads. If you look closely, you can also see that Robbie’s Quinn appears to have some tattoos, as with Leto’s Joker, along with some rather mysterious blue hair colouring that makes for an interesting addition to her primarily red, black and white colour scheme from DC Comics. More shocking is that Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress looks pretty grungy, in contrast to her prim and proper look from DC Comics. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje looks to be following the more humanoid design of Batman foe, Killer Croc from this photo, not the more bestial portrayals in some DC media, but he captures the bruiser look of Croc pretty effortlessly. Most conspicuous of all however is a very bald Will Smith, who looks to be boasting plenty of firepower as DC assassin, Deadshot.
On one last small note, the backdrop of the photo is significant as well, as it depicts a logo for Belle Reve. Belle Reve is a prison for DC super-villains, sort of like a more global Arkham Asylum for the DC Universe. Belle Reve has been depicted on one other occasion in live-action, as a corrupt mental institution where Clark Kent often sent Kryptonite-mutated villains on The CW’s wrapped Superman prequel series, Smallville.
Speaking of Smith’s Deadshot, Smith went ahead and revealed a better look at his costume, complete with the mask that is not present in the cast photo, via his official Facebook page. You can check that out below:
This puts Smith’s Deadshot a bit more in line with his DC Comics counterpart, as well as confirming that he retains the (retracted) arm-mounted pistols that the character is often seen wielding in close combat. You can also see that Smith’s Deadshot retains the character’s trademark eyepiece when he has his mask on, though it looks far more simplistic than other live-action Deadshot portrayals, surprisingly so. Perhaps the filmmakers wanted it to look more practical, as opposed to the conspicuously hi-tech eyepieces featured in the Deadshot incarnations on Smallville and Arrow. Secondly, Deadshot also appears to have a mantra that shows up both on his protective collar and his arm pistols, “I am the light, the war.” Perhaps the movie will delve into where Deadshot developed this mantra, as it seems to be quite significant to his character.
What do you think of the finalized Suicide Squad design for the movie? Is it everything you’ve ever dreamed of, or did you prefer the television incarnations from Smallville and/or Arrow? As usual, your comments are welcome below.
