Well, so much for all of those claims that Disney wasn’t making a sequel to their mega-hit 2013 animated movie, Frozen. Speaking at the annual Disney shareholders’ meeting today, Disney chairman and CEO, Bob Iger confirmed that the studio has begun work on a proper Frozen 2.
Naturally, story details and release info weren’t available for the sequel, which appears to be very early in development. All that was confirmed is that co-directors, Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck will return for the follow-up (despite only yesterday denying the existence of Frozen 2, and their involvement with it), as will producer, Peter Del Vecho. While it’s not formally confirmed yet, it’s also presumed that the leads from the first movie will all return.
Disney’s Chief Creative Officer, John Lasseter, who is currently at work on pre-production of 2017’s Toy Story 4, affirmed that the studio decided to go ahead with the sequel after making a short film follow-up, Frozen Fever. You can catch Frozen Fever in theatres as early as tomorrow (or tonight in some larger cities), where it will play in front of Disney’s live-action remake of Cinderella.
Frozen was loosely adapted from Scandinavian fairy tale, The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen, and went on to gross over $1.2 billion in ticket sales worldwide. It won two Academy Awards, one for “Best Animated Feature”, and the other for, “Best Original Song”, specifically for mega-hit single, “Let it Go.”
We’ll be sure to thaw out any details on the sequel as we can, so skate back to Eggplante for all news and updates on Frozen 2.
