Why you shouldn’t worry about Xbox One’s day one update

Seriously, everyone, read the details on this one before you start freaking out that Xbox One needs a day one update to be able to do anything:

“A lot of the apps come with the day one update because they wouldn’t have even been done.”

That’s what Albert Penello, Senior Director of Product Management at Microsoft, told Engadget earlier. So, clearly, the day one update will not actually require an internet connection so long as you pick up a game on day one as well (and, seriously, who isn’t?). We’ll assume, until we hear otherwise, that the update will not be on third-party titles, but with games like Ryse and Forza 5 being the talk of the Xbox town right now, we’re pretty sure you’ll be okay.

Realistically, the Wii U also had a day one update, as do a lot of devices now. Software is something that can be developed right up until the release of a console or other consumer device, whereas hardware has to be finalized much earlier in the development process.

We’re not sure why it’s such a big deal. It’s not like the console needs to be online all the time anymore.

Does this day one update bug you? It probably shouldn’t, but if it does, let us know why!
