Square Enix showcases Forspoken; a new, narrative driven IP

Last year, Square Enix revealed something it called Project Athia. Today, that game was re-revealed under its proper title: Forspoken.

A new, narrative driven IP, Forspoken is the story of a young woman who must harness her magical abilities in order to survive in a dangerous and fantastical world. One they call Athia. Her quest will take the form of an action/adventure and RPG hybrid.

Said main character — who is called Frey Holland — will be portrayed by actress Ella Balinska, who starred in the recent Charlie’s Angels remake. She features prominently within today’s title trailer, which you’ll see below.

“As the first video game I’ve worked on, and growing up a huge fan of video games myself, it’s remarkable to see the incredible world and story of Forspoken come together, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy,” said Balinska. “Frey as a character is real, she’s raw, she’s a girl who lost her way—both figuratively and literally—and is a character I immediately connected with, as I feel many people around the world will too when they set off on this adventure.”

Forspoken is being developed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, and will also release on PC. A 2022 release is planned.
