Grand Theft Auto V & Grand Theft Auto Online are heading to PlayStation 5

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V is being enhanced once again, and this time it’s for PlayStation 5.

During today’s PlayStation 5 livestream, it was announced that Grand Theft Auto V — which first hit Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17, 2013, and was then updated for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 — is in development for Sony’s next gen console. As such, it will end up being part of (at least) three different console generations, which is strange to think about.

This news kicked off Sony’s livestream, during which it was announced that Rockstar plans to bring Grand Theft Auto Online to the console as well. Based on what was said, it’s all expected to be released in 2021. GTA Online will also be standalone and free-to-play on PS5 for the first three months.

Grand Theft Auto V, on the other hand, will be “expanded and enhanced” for the new console. According to Rockstar this will mean “a range of technical improvements, visual upgrades and performance enhancements to take full advantage of the console’s powerful new hardware, making the game more beautiful and more responsive than ever.”

Adding on to all of this, Rockstar has also announced a GTA themed promotion. Through it, PlayStation Plus subscribers will be given $1 million in GTA$ for each month they log in to Grand Theft Auto Online in the lead up to its release on PlayStation 5.

*It’s expected that Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online will also be released onto Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, but no official announcement has been made.
