It feels like it’s been forever since the last Saints Row game came out, and in the world of gaming it kind of has. Sure, that’s hyperbolic to say, but four years have passed since the disappointing Gat Outta Hell semi-sequel released, and six years since Saints Row 4, which was the last proper game. Thankfully, though, there’s good news in store for us longtime fans.
It was very recently revealed that a new Saints Row game will be announced in 2020. This is according to Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz, who spoke to GameIndustry regarding some of his company’s projects. Also mentioned: That Dead Island 2 is not, in fact, dead. Thankfully.
“Saints Row is Saints Row,” Kundratitz said. “The two games are similar, for sure, but they’re also completely different. With Volition, we have the creators of all the Saints Row games as an internal studio and they’re not going to be distracted by anything else from creating our next game under this important franchise.
“Saints Row is very close to our hearts, and we’ll talk about it next year. For the time being, we just wanted to get the word out that it’s coming and it’s going to be great.”
Given that the last true Saints Row game released on previous gen hardware, we may well go a full console generation without a proper iteration. If Saints Row 5 is merely announced in 2020, it may be targeting PS5 and Xbox Scarlett. Here’s hoping it’s not too far off, though.
Of course, Saints Row was put on the back burner in favour of Agents of Mayhem, which didn’t turn out to be the best of ideas. That game wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t particularly good either. Repetition was its middle name, and not in a good way.
