Disney announces three new Star Wars films beginning in 2022

With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arriving in spaceports later this year, many fans are speculating as to what future Star Wars might have on the big screen. Disney put this speculation to rest on Tuesday, with the announcement of three new Star Wars films, set to debut in 2022.

Not much is known about the films, including whether or not they’ll be linked together like a traditional trilogy in the series or if they will be more independent a la Rogue One or Solo, both entries in the A Star Wars Story franchise.

While the standalone film centering around Boba Fett was never officially announced, Disney did let the public know that it was under development a few years back, so the company released a statement that they were no longer pursuing the project at the end of 2018.

This could be for any number of reasons, both specific to the project or perhaps interfering with Disney’s plans for the rest of the series. It is likely that Disney has had plans to release these three new Star Wars films for quite some time, and The Mandalorian just didn’t fit into those plans.

As it stands, Disney is set to release each new Star Wars film in 2022, 2024, and 2026, each during the Christmas season as they have taken favour to doing for the galactic adventures beginning with 2015’s The Force Awakens.

To get your Star Wars fix before then, Star Wars Episode XI: The Rise of Skywalker hits theatres this December. And even before that, you can wander over to Galaxy’s Edge in Anaheim, California at Disneyland Resort, opening May 31st.
