The rumours were true: Crash Team Racing is returning, and it will do so this summer!
The above was announced at tonight’s Game Awards, where Activision revealed that it’s been hard at work on a remake of the popular PlayStation One kart racer. In order to return this classic to fans of the genre, the publisher has enlisted the help of Beenox, who previously worked on several Spider-Man games for them, and has dubbed the new version Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled.
Nitro-Fueled will bring the characters, karts and tracks to modern consoles, employing full HD visuals and upgrades. The game, itself, is said to have been built from the ground up as more of a remake than a remaster, like the Crash and Spyro revamps that we recently received. This new version will also incorporate online multiplayer for the first time, allowing gamers to play against friends without needing to be physically sitting beside each other.
“The love that fans have for Crash Team Racing goes beyond just a fun kart racing game, and we’re excited to finally show fans what we’ve been working on to celebrate its 20th anniversary,” said Thomas Wilson, Co-Studio Head at Beenox. “Not only are we revamping Crash Team Racing from the kart up in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, we are giving fans a whole lot more including all the characters and tracks they love, with tons of added animations and personality that the original platform just couldn’t convey. We can’t wait to see fans go head-to-head as they test their Crash kart racing mettle in online multiplayer.”
Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled will be released on June 21st, at a suggested retail price of $39.99 American. It’s headed to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Switch. Furthermore, those who pre-order the digital deluxe edition will also guarantee themselves Nitros Oxide as a playable character.
