Today’s NHL 18 gameplay trailer takes a step away from the simulation’s core experience, and is instead focused on its brand new Threes mode. That is, a game type in which players choose a team of three different superstars (or mascots), then take the ice against other teams of three.
To say that Threes looks like fun would be understating it. In fact, the mode looks like it could end up stealing the show once NHL 18 releases this September. And, if it’s anywhere near as good as 3-on-3 NHL Arcade was last generation, it may just end up doing that.
What we get here is a great look at the on-ice action Threes will present, as well as its intriguing campaign. From bigger hits to greater showboating and everything in-between, it looks to have it all. This includes amazing-looking goals, player introductions and the ability to play as a trio of team mascots.
It was especially nice to see Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner highlighted within, as they’re two of the three that this Leafs fan of a writer will be playing as. William Nylander will be the other one.

NHL 18 will be released on September 15th, though its beta is currently ongoing. Those who pre-order the game will receive three days of early access.
