Team ICO’s beloved Shadow of the Colossus, which happens to be a spiritual successor to ICO, itself, is headed to PlayStation 4. Whether it will do so as a remaster or a full on remake is yet to be discovered, though judging by the trailer we saw tonight, it looks as if it may well be a complete remake. The visuals are simply stunning, and the game looks a lot better than it ever has before.
If you’re new to the fold, Shadow of the Colossus is an artistic and beautiful Japanese game that doesn’t feature much in the way of story or dialogue. Instead, it’s all about exploring a world and doing battle with the hulking monsters that walk, fly and swim throughout it. Said combat isn’t handled in a traditional sense, either, as the sheer size of each colossus forces you to be innovative. Scaling, jumping and hanging on for dear life are necessary strategies as a result.
Since I’ve never finished Shadow of the Colossus, I’m pretty excited about this announcement, even if the game is quite a few years old. What I played of it was absolutely badass, and I’m still kicking myself for getting sidetracked with other titles then not going back to it.
