FOX renews Gotham and The Last Man on Earth for fourth seasons

After recently announcing its pick-up of X-Men spin-off series, The Gifted, FOX has now confirmed that two of its ‘bubble’ shows have received renewals. Batman prequel series, Gotham and post-apocalyptic sitcom, The Last Man on Earth have both been officially renewed for the 2017-2018 season as of tonight, securing a fourth season for both shows.

The Last Man on Earth in particular has suffered from dwindling viewership in its most recent season, though the show is still thriving as a Sunday night cult sitcom, with plenty of positive reception from both critics and fans. The show wrapped its 18-episode third season this past weekend, with the season finale also concluding on a cliffhanger. The show’s renewal will thus come as especially good news to the show’s fans, since the season finale teased the addition of beloved comedian, Kristen Wiig to the series via a cliffhanger ending, after she headlined the midseason premiere of The Last Man on Earth as an all-new side character during this past March.

Gotham meanwhile has seen a small slip in live viewership during its ongoing third season, though nonetheless remains one of FOX’s top primetime dramas with the strong addition of digital and DVD sales, which will likely stay strong after the more positive critical and fan reception to the show’s current season. The DC Comics-inspired series saw an extended Winter hiatus from the end of this past January, and only recently resumed at the end of last month, giving it a delayed wrap at the start of this June, rather than May. An official renewal for Gotham means that the show will join FOX’s other veteran DC Comics-inspired series, Lucifer next season, after it was renewed in advance a couple of months ago. FOX’s two DC shows will also be competing against six other DC Comics-inspired primetime shows on rival network, The CW next season, namely Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and iZombie, all of which have now been renewed for the 2017-2018 season, and all of which will join the addition of The CW’s newly green-lit DC-inspired show, Black Lightning.
