It looks like Cloud 9 is staying open next season! NBC has announced today that they’ve given an advance renewal to their hit comedy series, Superstore, which will ensure that the show returns for another 22 episodes in the 2017-2018 season. This will mark the third season for the network’s well-received workplace sitcom.
Issuing a statement on the renewal, NBC Entertainment president, Jennifer Salke declared Superstore to be one of the funniest and smartest scripted comedy shows on television, one that not only makes audiences laugh, but also makes them think. Salke also praised the show’s lovable cast of characters, which she claimed are relatable, and do a good job of touching on modern issues that many people can understand and ponder.
Superstore is just over halfway through its second season at present, with the series chronicling the eccentric grind of a group of minimum-wage employees and retail managers in a St. Louis branch of fictional big box store, Cloud 9. The series stars America Ferrera, Ben Feldman, Mark McKinney, Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn, Nichole Bloom and Nico Santos. Created by Justin Spitzer, Superstore averages about 5.7 million live-plus-seven-day viewers per new episode across all platforms in its current second season, and has elevated the ratings count of NBC’s Thursday night primetime lineup around the core 18-49 viewing audience by 29% over last season.
While the live-plus-seven-day 5.7 million viewer count might sound a bit modest for a larger network like NBC, Superstore is nonetheless a considerable moneymaker and audience favourite for the network, on top of being one of the current highest-reviewed syndicated sitcoms by critics at this point. The show’s primary source of success is due to it being NBC’s #1 most watched and re-watched current series digitally, across the NBC app, Hulu and video-on-demand, where it has generated over 33-million full episode viewings since the end of last season.
Superstore marks the third advance renewal of a primetime scripted series for NBC, well ahead of May’s Upfronts deadline, and the first advance renewal for a veteran series. The network previously gave an advance renewal to fellow sitcom, The Good Place, which concluded its 13-episode first season in January, receiving rave reviews and strong ratings throughout. NBC also gave a two-season renewal to their hit freshman drama series, This is Us, which is the #1 highest-rated new series of the 2016-2017 season at this point, and yet another critical darling for the network. Both renewals were awarded last month.
You can watch Superstore from 8:00-8:30 P.M. on Thursday nights, on Global here in Canada, and NBC for our American neighbours.
