The CW renews quartet of DC shows, revives Constantine as animated series

The Television Critics’ Association Winter Tour for 2017 is now underway, and The CW has kicked off the festivities early by announcing early renewals for four of their five current DC Comics-inspired shows, plus three additional offerings! Along with that, they’ve also confirmed that a much-demanded cancelled series is coming back on CW Seed, albeit a bit differently than you may remember.

Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow have all been renewed for the 2017/2018 season, leaving only Vertigo/DC Comics series, iZombie without a renewal at present. This is likely because iZombie’s upcoming third season isn’t set to begin airing until this April. Regardless, this secures a third season for Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow, a fourth season for The Flash, and a sixth season for Arrow. Alongside these renewals, The CW has also confirmed renewals for Supernatural, granting it a thirteenth season, Jane the Virgin, which will be awarded a fourth season, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which will reach a third season.

Along with this news, The CW has confirmed that Constantine, the fan-favourite occult-themed DC Comics drama that ran for just thirteen episodes on NBC before being cancelled in 2015, is coming back to CW Seed, albeit as an animated series. This will have Constantine following in the footsteps of Vixen, another DC Comics-inspired animated series that has made it to two seasons on CW Seed, and inhabits the same shared television universe as Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. There are still sadly no plans to bring John Constantine’s character back to The CW’s live-action DC shows at present, after he appeared on Arrow last season, though the network assures that Matt Ryan will continue portraying Constantine in the new animated revival, with super-producer, Greg Berlanti overseeing the new CW Seed project.

In other related news regarding The CW’s DC Comics shows, a villain has been selected for the much-anticipated musical crossover between Supergirl and The Flash that will air later this season, and as many a DC fan suspected, it will be the Music Meister. The villain has not yet been cast, though has previously been portrayed by Neil Patrick Harris during the character’s Emmy-nominated debut in cartoon series, Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

All of The CW’s DC shows are currently on Winter hiatus, though Supergirl, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow will return towards the end of January, with Arrow resuming at the start of February. All four shows can be watched on The CW in the U.S., while Supergirl airs on Showcase here in Canada, on Monday nights from 8:00-9:00 P.M. EST, The Flash airs on CTV here in Canada, on Tuesday nights from 8:00-9:00 P.M. EST, and Arrow airs on CTV Two here in Canada, on Wednesday nights from 8:00-9:00 P.M. EST. Legends of Tomorrow meanwhile is moving to Tuesday nights from 9:00-10:00 P.M. EST with the start of this year, and airs on CTV Two here in Canada.
