If you were hoping to keep trucking on with your Telltale adventures on a last-gen Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 console, then Telltale has some bad news for you. In a last-second update before next week’s debut of The Walking Dead: Season Three – A New Frontier, Telltale confirmed that the game, contrary to prior reports, will not be releasing for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 at all. If you want to play on a console, it will have to be a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
While no doubt disappointing to some, the eventual abandonment of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 was a growing inevitability for Telltale. Microsoft has now ceased production of Xbox 360 consoles in favour of their current Xbox One console, for starters, not to mention that Telltale’s most recent offering, Batman: The Telltale Series, saw its first handful of episodes considerably delayed on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. This year’s The Walking Dead: Michonne miniseries from Telltale saw last-gen Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 ports released on time and without incident, though it seems that those games marked the final last-gen console foray for the Walking Dead universe.
If you’ve been playing Telltale’s The Walking Dead games on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, Telltale reminds fans that they can make a Telltale account both in-game and on the studio’s website that can be activated in each recent Telltale game, which will allow players to carry their story choices over to any platform of their choice, even if they switch console makes in the current generation, or switch to PC or mobile. Even if you do have to upgrade your console, or pick a new platform entirely, you won’t lose the story progress you’ve built in the previous two seasons or the miniseries, if you have a Telltale account that you activated in each game beforehand.
With The Walking Dead: Season Three – A New Frontier ultimately forsaking last-gen consoles, it seems pretty likely that next year’s Guardians of the Galaxy game from Telltale will also skip Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, along with the previously-confirmed second season of Telltale’s Game of Thrones, which doesn’t yet have a release window. Regardless, The Walking Dead: Season Three – A New Frontier will debut its first two episodes next Tuesday, December 20th, for PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS and Android, and will see a physical Season Pass disc at retail with these two episodes included, and the rest freely available as online DLC upon release, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on February 7th.
