Japan has been able to take fan-favourite RPG, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King on the go via their Nintendo 3DS handhelds since 2015, but finally, those of us in North America and Europe that are eager to do the same can circle a date on our calendars! The Nintendo 3DS edition of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King arrives in North America and Europe on January 20th, 2017, with an Australian release still being planned for some later point next year.
The Nintendo 3DS version of the game, which marks the first time that Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is being made available on a Nintendo platform, will add many new features to the experience, including the ability to speed up battle animations, undertake new side quests, recruit new party members, and unlike the original game build, enemy encounters are no longer random, with enemies appearing on the map to engage battle when touched. One small caveat however is that the game is only playable in 2D, even on a New 3DS handheld.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King originally released exclusively for PlayStation 2 in 2005, where it received high acclaim from critics and fans as a deeper, more story-based entry in Square Enix’s long-running Japanese RPG franchise. The game revolves around a silent hero that the player can name, who journeys with a ragtag group of other characters, and the king of his nation, who has been turned into an impish creature due to a curse by villainous jester, Dhoulmagus. The game was later re-released for iOS and Android-powered mobile devices in 2013 for Japan, and 2014 for international territories, with the mobile port also being praised by critics and fans across the world.
