Despite the sequel being in the works for many years now, Wreck-It Ralph 2 finally looks to be getting off the ground! Disney announced today, via Facebook, that Wreck-It Ralph 2 is a go, and that it even has a release date! The sequel hits theatres on March 9th, 2018. John C. Reilly is signed to return as Wreck-It Ralph, with Sarah Silverman also confirmed to reprise her role as Vanellope Von Schweetz. Rich Moore will also be returning to direct the sequel, alongside new co-director, Phil Johnston, after Moore’s huge success with this year’s earlier Disney offering, Zootopia.
Little is known about Wreck-It Ralph 2 at this point, but Johnston did reiterate plans to make the sequel go beyond the arcades, and explore the internet and online gaming. Reilly also voiced enthusiasm about returning to portray Ralph again, even bringing up how much positive response he got from children towards his character in the first movie.
The original Wreck-It Ralph hit theatres in late 2012, and received universal acclaim for its charming animation, lovable cast and clever sense of humour. It is widely considered to be the best video game-themed movie released to date, despite being an original property that’s not based on any specific video game. The movie does feature cameos and references from various real-life video games however, including appearances from characters like Bowser, Q-Bert, Chun-Li and Sonic the Hedgehog. Nintendo’s flagship mascot, Mario was also planned to appear in the movie, but was ultimately cut. Despite that, Disney is in active negotiations with Nintendo to have Mario and Luigi appear in Wreck-It Ralph 2 (which is now likely easier, as Nintendo’s current president, Tatsumi Kimishima is especially eager to expand Nintendo’s IP beyond video games), and it’s also previously been teased that Link and Zelda from the Legend of Zelda games could make an appearance in Wreck-It Ralph 2 as well.
