Had enough of next-gen remasters of games that are barely a couple of years old? Well, too bad! There’s another one on the way!
Darksiders II is the latest last-gen console game to be making the leap to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as was rumoured over the past several weeks, on account of leaked online retailer listings. Publisher, Nordic Entertainment has now confirmed the next-gen remaster, which is cutely titled, ‘Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition‘. Heh. It will release in time for this Holiday Season at the end of the year.
In its move to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition will pack in all of the game’s DLC for free, along with the core Darksiders II game, naturally, with everything now running in native 1080p resolution on both consoles. There’s no mention of a potential framerate upgrade however, over the previous 30fps that was available in the prior console builds of Darksiders II. Fortunately, some gameplay tweaks and adjusted loot drops will be implemented in the ‘Deathinitive Edition’, which will be overseen by Nordic Games, though developed by Gunfire Games.
Along with confirming Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition, Nordic Games also directly confirmed that there is an all-new Darksiders game in development, though they’re not yet ready to announce it. The company says that the next chapter of the franchise will be a, “Large scale project”, but for now, they’re focused on expanding the reach of the Darksiders games that already exist, which were previously brought to us by now-defunct publisher, THQ, and now-shuttered developer, Vigil Games, whose only completed games were the two current Darksiders titles.
Darksiders II originally debuted to reasonably positive reception in 2012, where it first launched at the end of that Summer for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and later expanded to Wii U as a launch title for Nintendo’s console a few months later. The Wii U port of Darksiders II was the last game published by THQ before they formally declared bankruptcy in January of 2013. As something of a hybrid between The Legend of Zelda and God of War, with Diablo-esque loot drops, Darksiders II is an action-adventure game that takes place concurrently with the events of the first game, which had you controlling the divine Horseman of the Apocalypse, War, after he is accused of starting The Apocalypse too early, and is thus stripped of his powers. Darksiders II instead puts players in control of fellow Horseman, Death, who has a new moveset and personality, and is attempting to figure out why his brother was framed for the false Apocalypse.
