If you were wondering why Sony has been quiet about their feature film adaptation of PlayStation video game sensation, Ratchet & Clank, it’s because they’ve been negotiating quite the star-studded cast for the production!
Unfortunately, this also comes with a slight caveat for fans anticipating the project. The movie’s higher ambition has led to a delay out of its planned Summer 2015 release, which many people no doubt already put together, due to the lack of information and marketing surrounding the movie lately. It has however been given a new, finalized release date of April 29th, 2016, and will officially be distributed by the Universal-owned Focus Features, and interestingly not by Sony’s own movie studio, Sony Pictures. This will likely also push back the planned feature film adaptation of another PlayStation franchise, Sly Cooper, which was formerly planned for release in Summer 2016.
It’s presumed that the planned PlayStation 4 tie-in video game, a re-imagining of the original Ratchet & Clank game for PlayStation 2, as the movie will be, has also been delayed to 2016 now.
Fortunately, like we said, the movie is packing some serious talent to compensate for the delay! Joining the video game series’ lead voice actors in the Ratchet & Clank movie, namely James Arnold Taylor as Ratchet, David Kaye as Clank, and Jim Ward as Captain Qwark, are: Paul Giamatti as the movie’s villain, Chairman Drek, John Goodman as Grimroth, Bella Thorne as Cora, Rosario Dawson as Elaris, and Sylvester Stallone as Victor. While not present in the original game, the duo’s beloved arch-nemesis, Dr. Nefarious will also be a part of the movie, voiced by Armin Shimerman.
Brought to the big screen with the co-operation of developer, Insomniac Games and animator, Rainmaker Entertainment, Ratchet & Clank tells the story of an alien lombax named Ratchet, who lives on a backwater planet in the Solana Galaxy, meeting a tiny robot named Clank, who is all brains and no brawn. Together, the two end up embroiled in a conflict with Chairman Drek, a ruthless alien business tycoon who is stealing pieces from other planets in the galaxy to rebuild his race’s heavily polluted homeworld. Thus, these two unlikely heroes are the only hope to save the galaxy, and they’ll do so with a lot of ridiculously unnecessary firepower!
