UPDATE: Shortly after revealing the lead cast of the Ghostbusters reboot, Feig followed up with a release date for the movie. Apparently, it will release earlier than expected, hitting theatres on July 22nd, 2016! Feig also clarified that while he has selected his four leads, all of them have just entered talks, and their contracts are still being worked out. That said, it’s doubtful that Feig would have bragged about his casting on Twitter if he had any reason to believe that the four chosen actresses would walk away, particularly his proven collaborators, Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. Regardless, after many long years, we finally have a new Ghostbusters movie coming together, and now know when to expect it!
Original report follows:
Director, Paul Feig has taken to Twitter to show the world the quartet of ladies who will be headlining the new all-female team of Ghostbusters in Sony Pictures’ upcoming reboot. It looks like Bill Murray only got half of his wish, but that’s alright, since four promising names have emerged to succeed Venkman, Spengler, Stantz and Zeddmore!
The new Ghostbusters are: Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon. While original Ghostbusters actor, Bill Murray was pulling for Linda Cardinelli and Emma Stone to join the ranks in his dream cast for Paul Feig’s reboot, Murray still placed Wiig and McCarthy in his dream cast, and it’s great to see that Feig will be reuniting with his former Bridesmaids stars. McCarthy’s involvement particularly seems like a no-brainer, since she also starred in Feig’s next two comedy vehicles, The Heat, and this May’s upcoming spy spoof, aptly titled, Spy.
Jones and McKinnon are both Saturday Night Live veterans, a sketch show where Wiig also got her start. You might have also seen Jones in Chris Rock’s recent comedy opus, Top Five.
No plot details have yet come to light about the Ghostbusters reboot, though it has been confirmed that it will not maintain continuity with any prior Ghostbusters media, and will start completely fresh with a new canon. Despite this, it’s unconfirmed if classic Ghostbusters villains like Gozer, Zuul, or the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man may see new interpretations. Insider reports claim that the reboot is set to begin filming this Summer. Given Feig’s two-year comedy schedule, it’s probable then that the new Ghostbusters movie will come to theatres in Summer 2017, considering that Feig’s next comedy, Spy hits the big screen this May. Sony has yet to set an official release schedule for the Ghostbusters reboot however.
You can catch Paul Feig’s next offering, Spy on May 22nd.
