Another comic book movie veteran will soon be taking a trip to Starling City, or is that Star City now? Regardless, Vinnie Jones, who played Marvel mutant, Juggernaut in 2006’s movie threequel, X-Men: The Last Stand, has just joined the cast of Arrow in a recurring role. Jones will play another of Green Arrow’s recurring comic book nemeses, Brick, a.k.a. street gang leader, Danny Brickwell. He’ll be appearing in episodes 10, 11 and 12 during Season Three, for a multi-episode character arc.
In the DC printed panels, Brick derives his villain moniker from his impenetrable skin and incredible super-strength powers. Arrow will maintain the character’s backstory about being a gang leader, one that will apparently threaten the city’s government infrastructure at large, though interestingly, The CW has appeared to indicate that Brick will not have his comic book powers in their beloved TV series. They will however slyly reference them, with ‘Brick’ being a street name derived from the urban legend that Danny Brickwell has been shot over a dozen times, and yet has never died.
This ties in with the showrunners’ claim that they wish to tone down the superpowers on Arrow during Season Three, following the Mirakuru-powered massacre that served as a key conflict in Season Two. Given that powers-heavy spin-off series, The Flash has now debuted to outstanding reception, this would appear to leave Arrow to focus on smaller-scale, non-powered threats, which led to the de-powering of Brick, at least to start.
Jones’ Brick is not the only established Green Arrow villain to be joining the show for Season Three either. Carrie Cutter, a.k.a. Cupid, is also debuting this season, played by Supernatural’s Amy Gumenick.
