On the absolute last day that it could have been saved, a miracle has taken place!
After being cancelled by NBC following five well-received, but ill-rated seasons, and after Hulu walked away from a deal with Sony to revive the series, Community will live again for at least thirteen more episodes, thanks to Yahoo.
Of course, this is not be the first time that a cult comedy series has risen from the dead. Family Guy and Futurama are widely known examples of other popular television shows that defied a cancellation due to sheer fan demand. Community however is perhaps one of the most tense and uplifting underdog stories in television history, particularly with its last-second pickup by a very unexpected saviour.
Yahoo Screen will play host to the sixth and presumably final season of the beloved cult comedy series, which famously started an internet meme and fan demand with its coy crack regarding, “Six seasons and a movie.” There’s still no movie, but at least the six season claim now appears to be accurate.
Given that the last-minute deal has been reached, series stars, Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Ken Jeong, and Jim Rash will all return for the new sixth season, as their contracts can now be upheld. Series creator, Dan Harmon will also be showrunner for the thirteen new episodes that will comprise season six.
Obviously, there’s no word yet on what plot details may be in place for the new season. One thing is for sure however; Greendale’s students and faculty are no doubt grateful that they very narrowly avoided being obliterated by asteroid!
Eggplante will continue to provide updates on the newly-revived Community. In the meantime, here’s to Greendale’s triumphant return!
