EA announces Star Wars: Battlefront for 2015

A new entry in the Star Wars Battlefront series is in the works, as EA kicked off their E3 2014 Preview show with a montage of developers and producers at DICE working on a new entry in the franchise.

There was unfortunately no release information given about the highly anticipated (and overdue) follow-up in the acclaimed shooter series, though the developer montage concluded by telling us that we could, “See more” in Spring 2015. In the meantime, a few teasing glimpses were offered as to potential gameplay segments in the new revival entry, including flying in the Hoth battle from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and zipping along in the Endor battle from Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Independent of EA’s press briefing, DICE claimed that their new Star Wars Battlefront game will primarily focus on battles and events like these from the original Star Wars trilogy of movies, and not the later prequels, nor the upcoming new trilogy under development with Disney.

DICE’s Star Wars Battlefront game is not meant to be the formerly cancelled Star Wars Battlefront III, once in development at the now-shuttered LucasArts before internally ceasing production without a proper announcement, but instead an all-new reboot that updates and re-imagines the series, “As DICE interprets it.” It is planned for release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

While EA formerly claimed during an annual stockholders’ meeting that the new Star Wars Battlefront would release in Spring 2015, it now looks more likely that the mega-publisher has quietly pushed the game into the year’s Fall quarter. Given the continued drought of information and footage for the game, the frequent delays of other next-gen offerings, and this E3 preview’s own implication that EA wishes to make the game an EA press conference showcase at E3 2015 (which would almost certainly take place during Spring 2015), the evidence is mounting that Star Wars Battlefront still needs a considerable amount of added time in the cooker.

Nonetheless, Eggplante remains committed to shooting you your news and updates related to Star Wars Battlefront, and the Star Wars franchise at large.
