Pirates of the Caribbean 5 gets a (very long) title

Pirates of the Caribbean - LogoThe inevitable fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie appears to be proceeding at a healthy pace. After working out writers, directors (yes, there’s two directors this time!), the return of Johnny Depp to the lead role of Captain Jack Sparrow, and a release date, one of the last missing pieces, the title, has now been placed. It’s a big one too!

The official title for the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie is: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The title is actually a reference to something spoken in the original Pirates of the Caribbean attractions within Disney’s theme parks.

Granted, this is one less syllable than the original movie’s subtitle, The Curse of the Black Pearl, but the movie’s official name is still quite a mouthful! It also seems to indicate that Sparrow and his crew are probably once again going to be dealing with an undead threat, after doing it in three out of the four movies already released, go figure.

Pirates of the Caribbean - Jack SparrowNo plot details are confirmed for the movie as of yet however, with Johnny Depp also being the only cast member signed at this point. Nonetheless, return appearances by Geoffrey Rush as Sparrow’s heated rival, Hector Barbossa and Kevin McNally as first mate, Joshamee Gibbs are extremely likely. A post-credits scene in 2011’s previous Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides would also likely indicate the return of Penelope Cruz in the role of Angelica Teach.

While receiving mixed reception from critics and audiences, particularly due to its infamously poor post-3D conversion, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides joined its two immediate predecessors in grossing over a billion dollars worldwide. Given that Disney and Bruckheimer’s last collaboration was the box office dud, The Lone Ranger (nonetheless received well by many audiences, including us), it’s inevitable that both parties would want to keep pushing their most profitable live-action franchise to make back some lost investments.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales arrives in theatres on July 15th, 2015. Eggplante will continue to deliver you all of your Pirates of the Caribbean news, as it sails to us!
