Curious about all of that Prince of Persia content being discounted for Sony’s now-running PlayStation Summer Sale? So were we!
Don’t get us wrong, we love Prince of Persia, but the series has been largely without updates in recent years. Ubisoft themselves even recently admitted that the Prince of Persia series is “dormant”, until further notice. The series’ previous offerings were the multi-platform and varied Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands games, telling four entirely different stories and having four entirely different adventures (one for PC/Xbox 360/PlayStation 3, one for Wii, one for DS, and one for PSP), along with the simultaneously-premiering Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time feature film, both released in May of 2010.
The series may still be sleeping, but it appears to have at least stirred, as Ubisoft has just green-lit a high-definition, touch-controlled remake of Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame for mobile devices! This follows in the footsteps of the original Prince of Persia game from the 1980’s getting an HD remake as Prince of Persia Classic, currently available to download for Xbox Live Arcade, the PS3’s PlayStation Store, iPhone/iPad, and Android devices.
Now simply titled, ‘Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame‘, likely to avoid confusion with 2004’s Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, the second chapter of the rebooted Sands of Time canon, the game follows the original Prince from the series’ debut title. He must save the princess he married from death, and unmask the evil Vizier posing as an impostor of our hero.
Originally released in 1993 for various home computers, Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame later received a downscaled port on the Super NES, and was an unlockable extra exclusively in the Xbox version of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It continued its unique rotoscoping movement technology for its platforming, which later gave birth to motion-capture graphics in modern video games. Like its predecessor, it’s also infamous for its very high difficulty level!
Considering that an already difficult game with already-touchy controls is being remade exclusively for touch control, it’s easy to get a little nervous about this release. Still, we have faith that Ubisoft can put a fresh coat of paint on this aged classic, just as they did for the original title!
In any case, Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame appears to be slated for a release before the end of this month, apparently on July 25th. It will set you back $2.99, and will be available for most smartphones and tablets, including the iPhone/iPad and Android devices. Don’t miss out on this revamped slice of classic gaming history, if you have yet to cut your teeth on it! Beyond that, Eggplante will be assembling any grains of Prince of Persia news, as we unearth it!
